AutoCAD (Updated 2022)

Autodesk, Inc. was founded in 1969 by four graduates of MIT: John Walker, Stephen Dorland, John R. Lundin, and John Warnock. They founded Autodesk, Inc. as a consultant firm to help the US Air Force develop programs to track and design military planes. In 1970, Autodesk, Inc. hired Larry Constantine, who had previously founded the Systems Development Corp. (SDC), to work on its first commercial product, the TaskMaster software. Autodesk released its first general purpose desktop CAD program, DraftSight, for microcomputers in 1982. For desktop use, the program included features like 2D drafting, feature-based dimensioning, document management, and architectural design.

The popularity of desktop CAD programs did not really take off until the early to mid-1980s. Autodesk’s first products included titles like AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and AutoCAD MEP. These products were released as commercial desktop software suites with similar features, but with different features and limitations. For example, MEP, the so-called engineering toolset, has the ability to automatically calculate and display the strength of design members like sliders and struts in a structure. The other software titles were focused on 2D drafting and 2D drawing; 3D modeling, however, was not introduced until AutoCAD 14.

Commonly used commands in Autodesk AutoCAD: Draw checkerboard with H (Show Hide) Draw or erase path (curves) with C (Color) Using any color will show the path (curves) so they can be edited. Can also use colors to draw over a path with M (Modify Path) – to open or close the path. Use O (Object) to create a path. Use R (Replace) to edit the path. Use C (Edit Colors) to change the colors used in the drawing. Use X (Edit Components) to add or remove path points. Use Y (Select) to move the cursor to a point and click to select it. Use Z (Zoom) to see details. Use W (Select) to select points on paths. Use H (Hide) to hide points on paths. Use H (Show Hide) to show and hide points on paths. Use C (Align) to align points and paths. Use W (Zoom) to see the path and points more clearly. Use P (

AutoCAD is a commercial, professional-grade drafting and design application that is the flagship application in the Autodesk product line. AutoCAD is available in four editions; Professional, Architectural, Architectural LT and Architectural LT Essentials. All of AutoCAD’s standard features are covered by the Architectural and Architectural LT versions, including several standard commands (such as “Clear to print”).

AutoCAD LT is available in three editions; Architectural, Architectural LT and Architectural LT Essentials. Architectural LT supports the drafting and design of architectural, mechanical and civil engineering drawings; Architectural LT Essentials supports more of the commonly used drawing functions. AutoCAD LT Architectural is similar to the Architectural edition of AutoCAD, but it includes several LT-specific features. AutoCAD LT Architectural Essentials is similar to Architectural LT, but it only includes the tools required to complete basic architectural drawings.

AutoCAD LT Architectural is the most customizable of the three LT editions. With the free “Revolutionary Design Construction Environment” software, architects and engineers can utilize AutoCAD LT’s advanced tools and functions in a familiar interface. AutoCAD LT Architectural Professional supports basic and advanced architectural design and drafting, and AutoCAD LT Architectural Professional Essentials supports basic and advanced architectural drafting. AutoCAD LT Architectural can be used on a desktop computer, laptop or tablet computer.

AutoCAD LT Architectural LT is the only AutoCAD edition available for the Microsoft Windows platform, and comes as an integrated component of the Microsoft Office 2013 suite. AutoCAD LT Architectural LT Essentials can be used on a Windows or Mac operating system. It uses the same software suite as AutoCAD LT Architectural, except for the familiar Microsoft Office interface.

AutoCAD LT Architectural LT Essentials is the basic component of the AutoCAD LT Architectural LT suite. It includes basic drawing commands, including command-line entry and drawing output, and views for drafting, design and construction. It also includes the capabilities of the Architectural edition of AutoCAD. AutoCAD LT Architectural LT Professional is like Architectural LT, but includes more of the features and functionality of the Professional edition. AutoCAD LT Architectural LT Professional Essentials is like Architectural LT Essentials, but includes more of the features and functionality of the Professional edition.

All AutoCAD editions offer the same functionality in

What’s New In AutoCAD?

Do more in less time with Markup Assist:

Create your own precision engineering drawing tools with the new Markup Assist feature in AutoCAD®. Automatically convert imported text or images into engineering annotations that allow you to modify the text or image, apply engineering values, or save the changes to the drawing file. (video: 1:15 min.)

Work together with others from the new drawing-focused design environment.

The new View Sharing feature allows you to collaborate on DWG drawings using Views, Groups, and Live Viewers. Designers can use the new collaborative drawing features to view and annotate a DWG file on a computer screen, or to review a DWG drawing with a colleague or client.

Live View:

New enhancements to the Live View experience include:

Show and hide advanced view tool icons

Easily zoom into the entire drawing, including the annotations, object properties, and layers. (video: 1:16 min.)

Multi-select in the viewport:

Select multiple objects, and pan/zoom/rotate/translate them simultaneously.

Snap to constraint intersections.

Examine the intersection of objects.

Reduce the thickness of the drawing grid when you’re viewing a 3D model.

Quick View:

Quick View allows you to quickly zoom to a visible portion of a DWG file. Simply double-click anywhere on a pane to zoom to that location.

Enhanced annotation views:

View labels, icons, and annotations in any view.

View reference geometry at the correct scale.

Import references from other drawings.

Drag and drop to move view elements.

Snap view:

Snap view provides three options to help you align views with geometric entities in a model.

Snap to surface feature

Snap to constrained intersection

Snap to constraint boundaries

New Attribute Panel:

The new Attribute Panel displays all the most important attribute values for every object.

Object properties, such as: 3D, 2D, and drawing system properties

Import/Export options

Common property values

Inspected geometry

Layers and annotation view properties

The new Viewport:

The new Viewport pane provides a more efficient way to view a DWG file.

Allows you to customize the look of the Viewport pane
