Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

AutoCAD 20.1

Our brief history of AutoCAD covers its formative years, its rapid growth, its transition from a DOS-based platform to Windows, and its role in the digital revolution.

Autodesk AutoCAD was developed by Autodesk’s engineering group based in Colorado, Colorado Springs. Originally called the Technical Drafting Suite, AutoCAD was to replace the company’s earlier Drafting Assistant program. At the time, the software was sold by third-party dealers and available only to clients of the firm. AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app for personal computers running on the DOS operating system. In 1983, Autodesk released its AutoCAD Modeling software, and by 1986, the full suite, consisting of AutoCAD, AutoCAD 2D, and AutoCAD 3D, was available on PCs.

The company was originally named Micrografx, Inc. In June 1986, Autodesk launched its first product, Plan and Profile (1985), a simple 2D drafting tool that was bundled with the AutoCAD program. Autodesk renamed its company Autodesk in September 1987. Autodesk’s first client software release, AutoCAD R14, was released in October 1989, for the first time supporting the Windows 3.1 operating system. AutoCAD was first used to model an actual house. One model was a model of a house in a CAD context for a personal computer; the other model was a model of a house in a traditional drafting context, paper and pencil, on a drafting table.

In November 1989, the company released AutoCAD LT, an off-the-shelf version of the AutoCAD software that would allow non-CAD professionals to create two-dimensional drawings. The software was sold through various dealerships, such as Fry’s Electronics, who sold AutoCAD LT at $495 (equivalent to $2,474 in 2019). As of 1994, there were four different versions of AutoCAD LT that had been introduced at different times, AutoCAD LT for Windows, AutoCAD LT for DOS, AutoCAD LT for OS/2, and AutoCAD LT for Unix. After 1993, there were no additional new releases of AutoCAD LT.

In September 1992, AutoCAD was introduced as a cloud-based product.

In October 1992, Autodesk released AutoCAD WS, a

2019: A new drawing package called AutoCAD3D was introduced as a replacement for Autodesk’s AutoCAD LT products for CAD work with Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS, and Android operating systems.

In addition to being a CAD program, AutoCAD is used as an interactive program for customer workflows. The list of operations available includes: creating and saving drawings and drawingspaces, editing existing drawings and drawing objects, displaying drawings or drawing parts, printing drawings, exporting drawings, integrating with legacy systems, importing, exporting, and exporting to DWG, DXF, and other file formats. AutoCAD provides graphical wizards and command line (batch) utilities for automating common tasks. Support for industry-specific file formats is available through plug-ins. Drawing windows provide methods to display and edit drawings. Operations can be restricted by viewports.

AutoCAD 2017 and later support creation of Drawingspaces, a feature enabling users to create a collection of drawings. Creating a drawing includes two steps: 1) drawing creation, and 2) drawing object creation. The user has the option to place the creation of a drawing or drawing objects within a drawing.

AutoCAD supports ISO standards. ISO 14030 is the ISO Technical Specification, and ISO 15000 is the ISO Business Standard.

AutoCAD holds two of the “People’s Choice” awards for Autodesk User Education. The Top CAD Application award is given to the application that receives the most votes in the end-of-year poll. The second award, called Top CAD Integration award, is given to the application that integrates CAD best with external information.

AutoCAD received a special commendation for best “Computers in Education” application at the Education Achievement Awards sponsored by the CompTIA Foundation. AutoCAD also received the Outstanding Application Award at the 2012 Art of Application Awards, and the second-place award for “Project of the Year” at the 2011 Art of Application Awards. The application was named a finalist in the 2010 Innovation Awards, sponsored by Total Quality Management magazine.

The Guinness World Records recognized AutoCAD’s drawing of the 10,000th vertex as “The World’s Largest Geometric Graph” and the AutoCAD name as “The Most Used Brand Name on the Web”, following its debut on social network “Reddit” in 2011.

AutoCAD received the 2010 title of “Most downloaded Autodesk

What’s New in the AutoCAD?

Enable users to quickly make changes to objects or the location of those objects in your drawings. Open your drawings with just a few clicks and with various easy-to-use, interactive panes in the fly-out context-sensitive menus. (video: 1:10 min.)

With AutoCAD, you can send or make changes to your drawing to other users or to AutoCAD itself. Add new blocks, components, parts, and other geometry directly in your drawing and send the changes to others. With Markup Import, import existing PDFs, files, or drawings for faster editing or with the ability to automatically copy changes back to the drawing. This feature is the successor to the Markup Assist utility.

Paper Prototyping and Printing:

Save time and money by printing a realistic, interactive model of your drawing. The Post-it model lets you quickly inspect a prototype, walk through your drawing with your team, and quickly create a finished drawing or report. (video: 1:10 min.)

Share your design through a printed preview or report. The new PDF-X3R format can retain annotations from drawings and even save the details of the annotation tool to the PDF file, which gives designers the ability to find and share your own notes.

Additionally, the PDF-X3R format allows printing of diagrams directly into a PDF format, along with annotating a drawing and recording marks and notes. This means your design can be further reviewed or shared and annotated before printing.

Quality Improvements:

The new Format Painter utility can quickly update entire frames with a single command and increases the number of blocks and layers that can be edited with the Block Editor tool. It also makes the viewport much easier to navigate and resize when working with large drawings.

The drag-and-drop property inspector and the improved property bar make editing properties much more intuitive.

Improvements to the Xref tool speed up finding parts and other geometry and greatly increase the accuracy of new Xrefs.

Several fixes and improvements have been made to the AutoCAD Map Component, and you can quickly find various features or edits using the new Find dialog box.

The Chart Object Property Editor is faster, more intuitive, and has a number of useful improvements. The Chart Object Property Editor also includes 3D printing support to help you visualize your chart models.
