The CAD revolution of the 1980s, in which manual drafting is being replaced by CAD, is estimated to have saved $80 billion and in the case of AutoCAD is the equivalent of $80 million per year in the U.S. alone. In this article, we’ll explain how AutoCAD works.
AutoCAD is a ‘dynamic’ application meaning that it constantly alters the appearance of the user interface (UI), such as the toolbars, palettes, and windows, for example, to reflect the current settings, such as the current drawing and model. This is known as dynamic visual ‘intelligence’ (DVI).
When the application first launches and before you perform any actions, the UI looks similar to the following screenshot.
One of the key parts of the UI that you see is called the ‘ribbon.’ The ribbon contains a number of buttons and tabs.
Every tab has functionality and also has certain default ‘behavior’ for the buttons in that tab.
In the following screenshot, we have a number of commands that are available.
Each command has a number of options you can use to define the behavior of the command.
The following commands can be found in the ‘Geometry’ tab:
Segments – creates straight, circular or angular segments.
Compound – creates complex shapes made up of segments.
Linetypes – create straight, circular or angular lines.
Drawing – the drawing area.
Attributes – the attributes.
Additionally, the commands in the toolbars can be used to modify the ribbon and the UI. The toolbar is where most of the most common commands are located. The following list describes the most common toolbar commands:
Objects – creates an object from an existing drawing, model or another object.
Entity selection – selects all entities in the current drawing, model or other document.
Dimension – allows you to add dimensions to an existing entity. You can also snap to a point in your drawing, along a line or to the midpoint of an entity.
3D rotation – allows you to rotate a 3D object around an arbitrary axis.
Measure – measures a length, angle, area or volume.
3D modeling – allows you to create and edit 3D models.

AutoCAD LT is an application for use on Windows, Linux and macOS. These platforms typically run the Python interpreter version of AutoCAD LT.
Previous versions of AutoCAD used the C++ ObjectARX API. The ‘CT’ tag in the filename of the AutoCAD 2010 to 2015 software indicates the use of C++ ObjectARX. The software is backwards compatible for.NET development and ObjectARX objects can be used for both C++ and.NET.

Wings are a four-armed mount. They are accessed through the Autocad menu item Model Browser -> Create, Construct, or Add. Wings are mounted to a non-moving parent object. They are automatically placed on the object using a z-up constraint so the wing tips are at the same elevation as the parent object.
