AutoCAD, originally named “Edison’s Disciples”, was developed by Randy Farmer for the computer-aided drafting (CAD) market. The first version was called “The Last Supper”, with a reference to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.[2]

The original AutoCAD version 1.0 was released in December 1982 for the MS-DOS operating system on a non-graphical minicomputer, the DECwriter by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). The name “AutoCAD” derived from the name of the MINIX computer that shipped with AutoCAD, and also from “Automatic Computerized Drafting”.[3]

Farmer, who had started writing software in his college dorm room, was working for Graphic Systems, the creator of the plotter software that drove the graphics terminals used in the printing industry. He was assigned the task of writing a computer-aided drafting program for the PLOTVAC minicomputer, a small machine designed to be an office back-up computer. Farmer was also working on an AutoCAD clone, for the multitasking OS/2 operating system, which was in an alpha stage.[4]

Farmer found that the plotter program was built in a custom language and that a large number of programs were needed to support the plotter. The plotter program was not object-oriented and was also lacking in graphics features. He decided to create a new plotter program that would serve as a template for other CAD programs.

I was curious about the specifications so I tested it for a couple hours.
The requirement to have the cards be able to read and write to the system at
the same time as the games was kind of ridiculous as the cards would have to
write to the system and when the system wasn’t connected it would have to
wait for the system to be connected and reading the memory when it was
connected. So instead of doing that it seems like the best thing to do would
be for the system to have 4 banks of 128MB each
