cognition remains the most popular textbook in the field, with cognition being the standard reference for all cognitive psychology. it has been in use for more than 60 years, and is now in its 11th edition. the 8th edition has been fully revised to meet the most recent changes in the field and to improve coverage of the latest in the research.
matlin cognition teaches students to design, test, and interpret cognitive research, and explain how cognitive processes are relevant to everyday, real-world experiences, and frequently examines how cognition can be applied to other disciplines such as clinical psychology, social psychology, consumer psychology, education, communication, business, medicine, and law. this new tenth edition has been updated to reflect the latest research, technology, and thinking, with more in-depth coverage of topics rising to prominence in the fields current knowledge base. expanded explanations balance classical and contemporary approaches to specific topics, while additional experiments and an emphasis on methodology and experimental design are included to facilitate a greater appreciation of the fields rigorous research.
to do that, we’ve attempted to find the best way to combine the matlin cognition principle of having clear, accessible, and high-quality coverage of the most current and important topics with a minimum number of pages, without sacrificing the depth of coverage needed to help students appreciate and understand the cognitive processes they study. we’ve added new topics, revised and updated information throughout the book, and more thoroughly explained key topics. to make the text more accessible, we’ve provided additional examples, practice exercises, and new ways to connect theory and applications. in addition, we’ve made the text easier to read by revising and clarifying paragraphs and adding line numbers. we’ve also made it easier to use the book’s study tools.
This is a very good text for anyone who requires a framework for understanding cognition; it covers traditional topics well and also examines some of the more cutting edge theories. It is easy to use, comprehensive, and engaging. The supplementary articles are also of note.
This book is a great overall introduction to cognitive theories. Matlins (1985, 1987) thoroughly analyzes what cognition is and does not simply apply these ideas for theoretical purposes. The book does not shy away from complexity. Matlins goes into detail in discussing developmental theories and relates them to social, economic and political contexts. This book alone would be a valuable addition for beginning graduate courses in cognitive science.
The DSM is the diagnostic manual published by the American Psychiatric Association. It is the standard for mental health care, the basis for insurance reimbursement, and the guide for clinical practice. As ofthe 8th edition, the manual lists more than 250 psychiatric disorders, including not only clinical mental disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder) but also more common neuropsychiatric conditions (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder) and behavioral conditions (e.g., attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and feeding disorders). The manual contains information about the physiological, cognitive, and emotional symptoms of disorders, their course and prognosis, treatment methods, and social and occupational consequences.
