in this mode, the data is read in real time (up to 1mhz on most units). the data is sent as a stream of uart packets, with a maximum of 64bytes per packet. data packets are sent repeatedly at a fixed rate, which may have different values on different units. this mode can be used to keep a gps trace on another unit while it is disconnected from the gps. the data is sent from the pdu to the computer, where it can be played with any sound card.
this mode is actually used by the older garmin l3 series gps units. each of the four receivers has its own uart port. data packets are sent from one port to the others, and can be read from any of them. this mode is only available with the newer garmin gps units.
usually these files are used to replace the existing files from an already purchased map source. in these cases there is no need to use the updating process. simply update your garmin unit with the newest map source file(s) (which are added to the zip archive) and your custom maps will be updated automatically.
the garminmapsource6162specialfullversion file and archive are available from your manufacturer’s website, like the garmin website for the mapsource 6163. these files are also available on garmin’s ftp server at the following location.
http://web.garmin.com/shop/map/store/ftp/ ftp server update ftp server location /garminmapsoure6162/ file name mapsource6162specialfullversion.zip description full version of the garmin mapsource 6162 maps containing 55 map-sets which will work with garmin units that are sold in north america, australia, asia, africa and latin america. the last few months i have been asked why i don’t upgrade my north american mapsource 6162 maps. to do this i have had to go into each map-set in turn and increase the resolution of the maps by zooming in a little, then recreating the topo-data of each map, and then copy each topo-zone in turn and paste into the north america map-set. this process takes an awful lot of time, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll get everything just right. that’s why i created my own collection of the garmin mapsource 6162 full version maps. you don’t have to do all this work to get your garmin running the maps correctly, as my maps are ready to go, just update your garmin unit with these files, and you’ll be all set.
