a computer aided image analysis program was used to determine geometric features of cracks, such as width, length, and surface area values, connectively and complexity from scanned photographs of the desiccation process. these parameters are important, because they influence both the soil hydraulics and mechanics. however, the development of cracks varies from soil to soil, even under the similar climatic condition.

in the present research, macroscopic soil cracks were identified based on the definitions of macrocracks and macroscopic cracks given by wei ( 2003 ) and wei et al. ( 2007 ). the definitions of macrocracks, macroscopic cracks, and macroscopic cracking method are given in table 1. macrocracks, which are distributed in soil, are vertical, horizontal, and tortuous cracks, and their length is equal to or more than 5cm. furthermore, they are mainly related to the formation processes of geological structural units. the soil cracks between two macrocracks are considered as macroscopic cracks, and the soil cracks inside a macrocrack are considered as macroscopic cracks, whereas the soil cracks between macroscopic cracks are considered as macroscopic cracks. macroscopic cracking method, which is used to identify macroscopic cracks, is similar to the traditional cracking method, but macroscopic cracks and the cracks inside macroscopic cracks are identified as macroscopic cracks. the definitions of macroscopic cracking methods are shown in table 2. the reference is mainly based on wei ( 2003 ), and the macroscopic cracks are identified in the present study. according to the definition of macroscopic cracks and methods, the present study conducted the quantitative measurements of the surface crack areas and the lengths of the macroscopic cracks in the study area, thereby giving the geometric characteristics of the surface crack network in the study area. the study area is located in zhejiang province, which is in the central coastal area of china.

in the researches about the classification of soil cracks, soil cracks with a minimum size of 0.5mm are defined as primary cracks, and the cracks with a size larger than 0.5mm but smaller than 10mm are defined as secondary cracks. the cracks with a size larger than 10mm are defined as tertiary cracks. soil cracks caused by organic matter are defined as organic cracks, and the cracks caused by inorganic material are defined as inorganic cracks [ 14, 15 ]. according to the description above, the cracks with a size of 0.5mm to 2mm are defined as primary cracks, and the cracks with a size larger than 2mm are defined as secondary cracks. the cracks with a size larger than 2mm are defined as tertiary cracks. the cracks with a size larger than 2mm are defined as quaternary cracks. soil cracks with a size larger than 2mm are defined as quaternary cracks. this paper uses the classification method of the soil cracks, developed by the national institute of metrology, china (nimc) [ 16 ]. the contents of this study are listed as follows.
firstly, the research data were collected. soil cracks are a common type of soil structural defect, and the distribution of soil cracks in different regions of the world is uneven. due to the natural environment heterogeneity, the data collection processes of soil cracks in some regions are more accurate than in other regions. this paper used the data of soil cracks from the following regions: xinjiang, southern china; albers, germany; altai, russia; iceland; and gaojiayuan county, northeast china. the data of soil cracks from the western region were not used in this study, as the cracks in the western region have a very large scale. the data were collected from large-scale field samples, and the field experiments were conducted with diverse soil types, which provided a strong foundation for the future researches on the influence of soil properties on the characteristics of soil cracks. secondly, the data were processed to make the soil cracks uniform in scale. for instance, different scales were used for the field samples, and the sampling method was selected according to the size of the cracks. lastly, the characteristics of soil cracks were analyzed using the statistical method developed by the nimc [ 16 ].
