I hope that the above post has helped clarify a few things. I’m the most experienced of the technical folks at Hollywood and this topic has caused many of us great amount of frustration over the years. If I have helped you in some way by writing this, I hope you can be thankful for it and do NOT feel like I am being sarcastic. A snarky word is a word that is sarcastic yet pleasant in tone and dialect.
Depending on the type of edit performed on the master, a number of different edited versions of the master may be produced. An extracted frame from a particular version (the one chosen by the user) may be applied to the sequence. Once the new frame has been applied, each subsequent frame will also have that edited version applied. This method of applying the extracted frame to the sequence will allow the user to audition changes made to the sequence, by viewing only those frames where the change has been applied. If the changes are minimal, there is no need to have another version that does not include these edits. Furthermore, if the edits were not intended for the final version, one can apply just those edits in each version so that the original master file is not affected.

In addition to the original VHS tape or the master file, some organisations will archive the video on other media. For example, they may use a DVD-R disc or storage device based on a compact disc. These discs can be manufactured on-demand and once loaded with data, a read/write/erase cycle can be repeated to create as many new discs as required. Because of the nature of archiving digital information, some data may be lost over time and so the storage media may require replacement after a certain period of time. Finally, it is also important to ensure that all users can access all of the copies of the content and that all of the storage media are accessible.
