.Zimmerman Verdict A Debate For All Ages
The verdict in the George Zimmerman case Tuesday wasn’t based on emotion. It was, as so often happens in this country, based on fact.
The verdict wasn’t about race, or who’s a man and who’s a woman, or any other subject that’s been whipped up into a frenzy. It was about the law. And as the verdict was announced, Zimmerman’s lawyers (white) and his supporters (black) were celebrating. Their race, unlike Zimmerman’s, didn’t matter.
No matter what happens now, the liberal critics of race and gender have been proven wrong. It wasn’t about a person of white or black or any other color. It was about the facts of the case.
The facts are: Trayvon Martin was unarmed, and Zimmerman, a man of Hispanic heritage and under indictment for battery, was armed. Martin was shot as he was struggling to stand, and then beaten to death. Zimmerman isn’t a hero. He’s the bully, punching a kid who happens to be black. His self-defense argument crumbled. Zimmerman ended up looking more like the bad guy. The fact that there was not a single eyewitness to the entire incident, and that there was no evidence of a call for help coming from anyone other than Trayvon Martin, makes the case even stronger against Zimmerman.
Zimmerman’s supporters will point to the fact that the verdict was left to the state. But that’s only half the story. The state has an interest in convicting Zimmerman, and that’s all it has in this case. We don’t know if a jury left at the behest of the local prosecutor would have acquitted him of all charges. The jury isn’t infallible, but it’s an important check and balance against prosecutor misconduct. Prosecutors should not win cases on popularity, nor should they be allowed to legislate from the bench. And they shouldn’t be allowed to lie to juries.
Barry Jackson, a lawyer with experience in cases of racial bias, pointed out that a prosecutor’s job is to look at the facts, and make the best decision on which to file charges.
By all accounts, Zimmerman’s conviction wasn’t about racism or sexism. It was about the law. The state of Florida has to prove the facts beyond a reasonable doubt. The
