Lets say we have two parts of the system, the “boring” laser engraver, and a control board that takes the data from the board and speaks to the laser, so that it knows what to do, and also how to control the laser. The whole thing is powered from the laser itself, so the control board isnt really doing anything any other than relaying data. If we have separate power and USB, then the laser needs to be capable of stepping in as a USB host, ideally in an embedded manner. This is a really big job, because the NEJE DK-8-KZ has only 2 USB ports. And anyway, theres no need to use the NEJE DK-8-KZ in USB mode. I removed the USB jack from the laser to make it more flexible and simply built a new control board that can talk to the laser using RS232. This works pretty well and the laser works nicely from a USB point of view, but it means that you cant power the laser from the NEJE DK-8-KZ and use it as a USB host.
This is the silver bullet, because it means that you can power the laser from the control board, and also use it to talk to a client PC over USB, using a standard NEJE DK-8-KZ cable and standard PC male plugs. I have this working, just no desktop PC we use the laser for. So, in theory, we can have a control board and a laser with a NEJE DK-8-KZ, simply by connecting the power connectors together and using power from the laser itself, and using the USB ports on the PC to talk to the laser, and we have a fully functioning control PCB that we can develop. With this, theres a good chance that we could run multiple PCs, so if a design engineer doesnt have a desktop PC but could provide a NEJE DK-8-KZ, and also has some limited amount of time to devote to this project, then we might be able to get some laser engraving done.
